Dan Scales, PharmD, AAHIVP

Dan Scales currently works as the Director of Pharmacy Collaborative Care at Vivent Health, overseeing clinical pharmacy and experiential education. Prior to merging with Vivent he owned and operated Scales Pharmacy, an HIV focused and sex-positive independent pharmacy in Denver, CO. Through his time at his own independent pharmacy and continuing as a part of Vivent Health, Dan Scales has pursued legislative and operational reform of pharmacy practice aiming to reduce disparities in health care by increasing access to pharmacy services. He is specifically interested in LGBTQIA rights and a harm reduction approach to health care, advocating for increased syringe access and collaborative practice reform to increase access to naloxone as well as pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis of HIV. Dan Scales has also spent time as a member of various nonprofit Boards of Directors, previously chaired Colorado’s Medical Assistance and Service Advisory Board, currently co-chairs Denver’s Fast Track Cities Initiative, and sits on Colorado’s State Drug Assistance Program Medical Advisory Board.

Milena Murray, PharmD, MSc, BCIDP, AAHIVP, FCCP

Dr. Milena Murray is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the Midwestern University College of Pharmacy, Downers Grove campus and a System-Level HIV/ID Clinical Pharmacist at Northwestern Medicine. She completed her Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and her Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation at Northwestern University. Her post-graduate training consisted of a PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and an Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy Fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital through Midwestern University. Her primary research interests are drug shortages and HIV/hepatitis C pharmacotherapy. Dr. Murray is a Board Certified Infectious Diseases Pharmacist and an AAHIVM HIV Pharmacist.

Statement of Need

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is no longer a one-size-fits-all approach. Today, multiple options and dosage forms exist to offer individualized protection for the 1.2 million people in the United States for whom PrEP is recommended. As medication experts of the health care team, pharmacists need to be able to educate patients and prescribers alike on the indications, safety, efficacy, administration, and prescribing requirements of new PrEP agents. However, surveys of learning and confidence across the United States reveal that approximately 50%-70% of practicing pharmacists lack sufficient knowledge to counsel on PrEP therapy.

In part 2 of this CMEO podcast series, New Horizons in HIV Prevention Education: A Closer Look at Novel Therapies, join Drs. Milena Murray and Dan Scales as they review recent advances in HIV prevention products and address knowledge gaps in the HIV health care continuum.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to evaluate the efficacy and safety data for current and emerging PrEP to optimize long-term outcomes for patients and improve the continuum of care.
