Ann Childress, MD

Before earning her medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, Dr. Childress studied at St. Louis University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri. She completed a psychiatry internship and residency as well as a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina.

Today, roughly 80% of her practice is research-based. She also has adjunct faculty appointments at the University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Medicine and Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Childress is board certified in psychiatry, with a subspecialty in child and adolescent psychiatry.Dr. Childress has authored numerous publications on the topic of ADHD. As Co-Principal Investigator, she has participated in more than 175 clinical trials.

Dr. Childress is also a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She is President of The American Professional Society of ADHD and Related Disorders, and is Education Director for the Nevada Psychiatric Association.

Theresa Cerulli, MD

Theresa Cerulli, MD, is a graduate of Tufts University, University of Massachusetts Medical School, Harvard Longwood Residency Program in Adult Psychiatry, and Harvard Fellowships in Medical Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry. Dr. Cerulli is Board Certified in Psychiatry and is on faculty at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and recently presented as faculty at NEI, Neuroscience Education Institute.

She received the 1997 Harvard Residency Teaching Award and has published several journal articles in the Harvard Review of Psychiatry and Journal of Medicine. Dr. Cerulli has continued in her role as a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty as a Clinical Instructor at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, lecturing on a range of neuropsychiatric topics including attention deficit disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. She is a supervisor for the Harvard Longwood Residency Training Program.

Dr. Cerulli is the co-founder and prior Chief Medical Officer of ADD Health and Wellness Centers, specializing in the holistic treatment of children and adults with ADD/ADHD and co-existing behavioral health conditions. Her vision is in combining traditional medicine with healthy living to promote cognitive and emotional well-being. She previously served as Medical Director for the Hallowell Center and co-founder of Hallowell ADDvance. Dr. Cerulli has served as a national expert witness in over 20 child and adult psychiatric legal cases. Since 2003 she has presented nationally and internationally as a consultant and speaker in the pharmaceutical industry with various companies including Shire Pharmaceuticals, Eli Lilly, Novartis, Allergan, Takeda, Sunovion, Supernus, Abbvie, Neos, and Cingulate Therapeutics in their CNS divisions. She was a sub-investigator with East Coast Clinical Research for two phase IV psychotropic medication trials and is certified by the Major League Baseball Commission (MLB) to conduct player therapeutic use exemption (TUE) evaluations for major and minor league players.

Familiar with the media, Dr. Cerulli has appeared on numerous television programs: channel 7 Urban Update for a debate on the use of psychotropic medications in children, channel 5 ABC Evening News for a segment on learning disabilities, and WMUR Evening News to discuss integrating mental health care. Dr. Cerulli was also interviewed on TV channel 56’s Health Watch regarding the use of Quantitative EEG and moderated a series of psychiatric expert panel discussions on medicalcrossfire.com. Her other media appearances include interviews with local radio stations WBCN, WESO, Radio Disney, and the Frankie Boyer Show as well as several newspaper and magazine articles. She volunteered as a medical advisory board member of Kiwi magazine. Most recently Dr. Cerulli was filmed in the Dr. Mom ADHD video series and as the moderator and ADHD expert panelist on HCPLive.com, as well as a national satellite news media tour on the topic “Back to School with ADHD,” August 2021.

Statement of Need

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that varies in its symptom presentation and functional impact across the lifespan. Although it is now recognized that ADHD may persist to adulthood, it often goes undetected in adults, being misdiagnosed as other psychiatric and frequently comorbid conditions. Diagnosis is complicated in that symptom presentation may vary as the individual transitions from childhood to adulthood. The use of diagnostic criteria and evidence-based tools can help to differentiate the diagnosis of ADHD in adults, particularly in the context of comorbidities. This is imperative because an accurate diagnosis not only facilitates early intervention but also offers a sense of relief as difficulties experienced at home and work are now explained.

This CME Outfitters activity will provide clinicians with the appropriate tools to facilitate the early detection of ADHD in adults, particularly within the context of comorbidities.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to:
