Patient Voice Spotlight: The Importance of Independent Medical Education (IME) in Improving Cancer Care

During a recent KnowFully Medical Education (KME) company meeting, we were honored to welcome Jill Feldman, a nationally recognized lung cancer advocate and long-term survivor, to share her perspective on why patient involvement in continuing education is essential. Jill spoke candidly about losing multiple family members to lung cancer before facing her own diagnosis, an experience that shaped both her advocacy and her belief that education must reflect the realities patients face. She emphasized that behind every data point is a person whose quality of life, daily burdens, and treatment fears are often invisible in clinical literature.

Jill described how authentic patient collaboration can transform IME by humanizing science, illuminating real-world challenges, and ultimately changing clinical practice. Her stories demonstrated the profound impact of integrating patient voices early in the educational design process – not as a checkbox, but as partners who help ensure content is relevant, equitable, and aligned with unmet needs.

She noted that when clinicians hear directly from patients about issues like treatment tolerability, communication barriers, and lived burden, it reshapes their approach to care in meaningful, lasting ways.

Her message underscored the opportunity, and responsibility, we have to build education that drives not only evidence-based learning but compassionate, patient-centered care.

Jill Feldman is a founding member of EGFR Resisters, a global community of patients and caregivers impacted by EGFR-positive lung cancer dedicated to improving outcomes by accelerating research. She also serves on the planning committee for the EGFR Resisters Research Summit, an annual summit held with the mission of identifying, cultivating, and preparing Young Investigators who work on targeted lung cancer therapies for successful careers dedicated to the advancement of EGFRm NSCLC, presented in collaboration with CE Concepts.
