Statement of Need

Suboptimal health care and poor health care outcomes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) often stem from health care professionals (HCPs) lacking necessary skills to treat these individuals. It is crucial that HCPs receive education on how to communicate effectively with patients with IDDs, and that this education uses patient-centric language and focuses on understanding each individual’s unique needs. Additionally, HCPs must be trained to recognize and challenge underlying ableism as well as learn how to improve their approach to IDDs in the future. By using supportive care strategies tailored to the specific needs of patients with IDDs and engaging a multidisciplinary team, HCPs can improve their standards of care. Reviewing case studies that illustrate best practices can enhance and ultimately improve health care outcomes for individuals with IDDs.

In this CME Outfitters Snack, part of a collection on health access and social responsibility, expert faculty will identify educational and care-based gaps that impact health care outcomes for individuals with disabilities, and demonstrate collaborative strategies for the interprofessional, multidisciplinary team to improve inclusive practices and optimize care for individuals with disabilities.
