Statement of Need

Spanish-speaking populations in the United States often face significant disparities in health care access, quality of communication, and health outcomes. A key driver of these disparities is a lack of culturally and linguistically competent communication between healthcare providers and patients. Despite increasing awareness of these barriers, many clinicians still require education on the necessary skills to engage Spanish-speaking patients in a meaningful, respectful, and effective manner.

In this CMEO Snack, expert faculty will discuss the integration of patient-centered communication strategies that incorporate appropriate formality, family engagement, and effective use of interpretation services as well as provide strategies to apply plain-language and medical Spanish communication techniques, including teach-back, to enhance patient understanding during multilingual encounters.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to better:

  • Integrate patient-centered communication strategies that incorporate appropriate formality, family engagement, and effective use of interpretation services
  • Apply plain-language and medical Spanish communication techniques, including teach-back, to enhance patient understanding during multilingual encounters
