Riding the Waves of Obesity Science - Reaching the Shoreline: Emerging Amylin-Based Therapies and Trial Signals

Statement of Need

The obesity pipeline is moving faster than the evidence can be absorbed. A new class of amylin-based agents — investigational therapies now advancing through phase 2 and phase 3 trials with several studied both on their own and in combination with incretins — is generating data that clinicians may soon be asked to interpret and act on. In this closing conversation, W. Timothy Garvey, MD, joins series chair Robert F. Kushner, MD, to translate the science into practical judgment. Dr. Garvey surveys the emerging amylin landscape and offers a framework for reading it fairly — weighing efficacy against tolerability, distinguishing what matters to patients from what makes headlines, and recognizing that treatment response varies from person to person, just as it does with every other therapy.

As the fourth and final segment, this conversation brings the series full circle. After framing obesity’s heterogeneity, exploring amylin biology, and considering phenotype-guided care, it turns to the closing question: as these therapies arrive, how do we evaluate them — and whom might they help? A forward-looking, evidence-grounded finish for clinicians preparing for what comes next. All data discussed are investigational and presented as such.
