Wendy L. Hobson-Rohrer, MD, MSPH, FAAP

Wendy L. Hobson-Rohrer, MD, MSPH, FAAP, is the inaugural Associate Vice President for Health Sciences Education and a professor (with tenure) of pediatrics at the University of Utah.

As a general pediatrician, she cares for patients and teaches students and residents at the University of Utah South Main Clinic, whose mission is to increase access to health care for marginalized populations and provide the highest quality of care to patients regardless of their financial ability to pay. She is the Executive Clinical Director, working collaboratively with dentists, physician assistants, midwives, nurse practitioners, family medicine physicians, obstetricians, and pediatricians.

Dr. Hobson-Rohrer graduated from Cornell University with a BA in Spanish and Latin American Studies with distinction in all subjects. She earned her MD degree at Cornell University Medical College. Following pediatric residency, she worked in the National Public Health Services Corp, during which time she completed an education fellowship and MSPH at the University of Utah. She is a graduate of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program and holds a graduate certificate in conflict resolution and mediation.

Statement of Need

Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT) benefits provide comprehensive and preventive health care services for children under age 21 who are enrolled in Medicaid. Federal statutes and regulations require that EPSDT preventative, dental, mental, developmental, and specialty services be provided even when state Medicaid programs do not cover these same services for adults. While EPSDT was intended to expand health coverage for all low-income children, implementation has been inconsistent. Individual states are allowed to set “reasonable limits” for services covered based on certain criteria like medical necessity or utilization control, which can have the practical effect of limiting children’s access to care. Other barriers include a lack of primary health care professionals in medically underserved communities and inadequate reporting and performance standards.

EPSDT has the potential to improve health outcomes for all eligible children by ensuring they receive needed health services as early as possible in a variety of settings, including at school. This educational discussion led by national experts will introduce EPSDT, what it covers, and how it can be used to address social determinants of health in the delivery of high-quality health care.

ABIM MOC 0.75

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 0.75 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

Dietetics (CDR)

Completion of this RD/DTR profession-specific or IPCE activity awards CPEUs (1 IPCE credit = 1 CPEU). If the activity is dietetics-related but not targeted to RDs or DTRs, CPEUs may be claimed which are commensurate with participation in contact hours (1 hour/60 minutes = 1 CPEU). RDs and DTRs are to select activity type 102 in their Activity Logs. Performance Indicator selection is at the learner’s discretion.

MIPS Improvement Activity

Completion of this accredited CME activity meets the expectations of an Accredited Safety or Quality Improvement Program (IA_PSPA_28) for the Merit-based Incentive Payment Program (MIPS). Clinicians should submit their improvement activities by attestation via the CMS Quality Payment Program website.

Royal College MOC

Through an agreement between the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, medical practitioners participating in the Royal College MOC Program may record completion of accredited activities registered under the ACCME’s “CME in Support of MOC” program in Section 3 of the Royal College’s MOC Program.
