Statement of Need

Obesity care is an ongoing concern for clinicians and caregivers, particularly those who care for individuals in communities with limited resources and higher rates of overlapping comorbidities. Compounding these concerns are the forms of bias that can affect care for individuals with obesity, such as ill-fitting gowns or chairs that are too small, and caregivers placing excessive emphasis on weight loss at the expense of addressing other health issues, potentially missing important diagnostic clues. Additionally, the stigma surrounding obesity can lead patients to feel blamed for their condition. Limited access to health care and nutritious foods can also exacerbate these challenges. However, there are options for managing obesity in adults, particularly when the focus shifts to maintaining a healthy weight and treating it as a chronic condition rather than solely focusing on diet and exercise. Medications, surgical interventions paired with psychosocial support, and a comprehensive, collaborative, patient-centered team approach can assist caregivers in helping adults with obesity manage their condition and prevent it from leading to other health complications.

In this CME Outfitters Snack, part of a series on health access, social responsibility, and obesity care, expert faculty will address key health inequities associated with obesity in adults in underserved communities and how caregivers can work within multidisciplinary teams to implement effective, culturally tailored strategies to address those inequities.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to better:

  • Identify key health inequities associated with obesity in underserved communities
  • Implement effective, culturally tailored strategies to address health inequities in underserved populations
