Elevating the Role of Behavioral Health in Men’s Health Across the Lifespan

Statement of Need

Men face unique behavioral health challenges that often go unrecognized due to stigma, cultural norms, and underreporting, leading to disparities in diagnosis and care. Across their lifespan, men’s mental health concerns frequently appear through externalizing behaviors, physical symptoms, or social withdrawal rather than traditional emotional expressions. These distinct presentations, along with factors such as trauma, substance use, and life transitions, contribute to delayed identification and treatment. Elevating the role of behavioral health in men’s health is essential to improve early detection, foster trust in clinical encounters, and promote integrated, culturally responsive care that meets men’s evolving needs at every stage of life.

In this CME Outfitters Snack, part of a series on health equity, expert faculty explore how psychiatric conditions manifest differently in men, including the effects of stigma and underreporting on diagnosis and care. They also review practical tools and evidence-based, culturally sensitive strategies to integrate behavioral health into men’s care and reduce disparities.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to better:

Assess the varying clinical and social presentations of common psychiatric conditions in men, from adolescence through older adulthood, including how stigma and under-reporting influence diagnosis and care
Identify appropriate screening tools (e.g., PHQ-9, GAD-7) and assessment strategies for detecting depression, anxiety, substance use, and trauma-related disorders in men across different life stages
Apply evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and trust-building approaches to integrate behavioral health into men’s health care to promote engagement and reduce disparities in outcomes
