Elevating the Role of Behavioral Health for Patients with Chronic Disease

Statement of Need

Patients with chronic diseases frequently experience comorbid behavioral health disorders that complicate disease management, worsen outcomes, and increase health care utilization. Despite evidence linking psychiatric illnesses (e.g., depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia) to poor adherence and higher mortality, behavioral health remains underrecognized in chronic disease care. Health care professionals are positioned to intervene by using validated tools to identify and address psychiatric symptoms and by integrating behavioral health, medical management, and culturally sensitive social support strategies to help improve patient outcomes and reduce disparities in disease management.

In this CME Outfitters Snack, part of a series on health equity, expert faculty examine how psychiatric conditions present in women across life stages, emphasizing effective screening, culturally sensitive communication, and integrated care strategies to improve engagement and behavioral health outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to better:

Identify the bidirectional impact of psychiatric illnesses (e.g., depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia) on common chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic pain, using evidence-based data and case examples
Integrate appropriate behavioral health screening tools (e.g., PHQ-9, GAD-7) to support early detection and management of behavioral comorbidities in patients with chronic disease
Develop culturally sensitive, collaborative care plans that integrate behavioral health, medical management, and social support strategies to improve patient outcomes and reduce disparities in chronic disease management
