As a licensed psychologist, educator, speaker, and advocate, Dr. La-Toya Gaines is a leader in the mental health field. She has earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and her master’s and Doctor of Clinical Psychology at the Michigan School of Psychology. In addition to her educational accolades, she has over a decade of experience as a therapist serving adults, families, and children in addition to her experience as a professor and faculty member where she educates and supervises future clinicians, develops curricula, and helps shape the future of the field. In 2016, Dr. Gaines founded Family Matters Counseling and Psychological Services, Inc. in Southfield, Michigan where she specializes in child and family psychology, the self-esteem and self-confidence of young women, and the culturally unique emotional needs of Black women. “My greatest professional goal is to empower Black women to shed the weight of being a Strong Black Woman,” she states. Clinically, she provides culturally competent assessment and treatment. Additionally, as an advocate to empower Black women to center themselves, Dr. Gaines developed and delivers a 6-week workshop, webinar series, and speaking platform to help shed the Strong Black Woman narrative and provide the support and education to find their voice and pursue the lives they desire. Dr. Gaines is an experienced, introspective, and empathetic clinical psychologist who provides quality care and space for those that often go underserved and unheard. Her excellence in client care, social justice, and cultural competence makes her a leader and change agent in psychology and life.

Statement of Need

According to the NIH, an estimated 21 million adults experienced at least one major depressive episode in 2020. Clinicians understand that female gender, social isolation, and disturbed family environment increase risk, but may not recognize presenting symptoms of depression in men, patients from racial/ethnic underserved communities, individuals with language barriers, or older adults. As a result, major depressive disorder (MDD) is under-diagnosed in Black, Hispanic, and other underserved populations. Administering the PHQ-9 assessment quickly, impersonally, and without cultural humility leads to under-diagnosis of MDD, as an individual’s cultural preferences and health literacy are not taken into account.

During this educational presentation, expert clinical faculty will share equitable depression screening tools, including assessments designed for pediatric, geriatric, and postpartum patients, and those with bipolar disorder. Faculty will discuss clinical examples to illustrate culturally humble depression screening tool selection and application to reduce disparities in screening.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to better:

  • Identify disparities in depression screening and care, particularly for underserved communities.
  • Integrate equitable depression screening into clinical practice.
