Statement of Need

Spanish-speaking and Latine populations in the U.S. experience significant health disparities driven by language barriers, limited access to culturally responsive care, and systemic factors such as documentation status and insurance limitations. Pharmacists play a critical role in improving medication understanding, adherence, and overall health outcomes within these communities. However, many pharmacy professionals lack training in culturally responsive communication and awareness of Latine cultural values that foster trust and shared decision-making. Education is needed to equip pharmacists with the skills to integrate cultural competence into their practice, effectively engage Spanish-speaking patients, and promote equitable, patient-centered care.

In this CMEO Snack, expert faculty will share strategies on how to better integrate Latine cultural values into pharmacy practice to facilitate trust, enhance shared decision-making (SDM), improve health outcomes for Spanish-speaking patients, and utilize culturally responsive communication techniques in patient counseling to overcome barriers to care.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to better:

  • Integrate Latine cultural values into pharmacy practice to facilitate trust, enhance shared decision-making, and improve health outcomes for Spanish-speaking patients
  • Utilize culturally responsive communication techniques in patient counseling to overcome barriers to care such as language, documentation, and insurance and improved medication health literacy when engaging with diverse Spanish-speaking populations
