Statement of Need

Individuals who are neurodivergent face disparities in quality of care, communication access, and employment, particularly nonverbal individuals and those with intellectual disabilities. Implicit bias and limited access to key services exacerbate these challenges. Executive functioning, sensory differences, and anxiety can impact clinical interactions and lead to symptom dismissal, contributing to poorer health outcomes, especially during transitions to adult care. Additionally, health risks are further increased by chronic stressors such as social isolation, discrimination, and barriers to care. To ensure equitable, affirming care and improved outcomes for these patients, health care professionals need to provide targeted interventions that include addressing social determinants of health and accessibility issues, using clear and direct communication, adopting trauma-informed care practices, and assessing for comorbidities.

In this CME Outfitters Snack, part of a series on health access, social responsibility, and neurodiversity, expert faculty will discuss strategies to improve communication with patients who are neurodivergent during routine clinical encounters and will identify social drivers of health that are unique in neurodiverse populations.
