Statement of Need

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is often recurrent, and achieving remission does not eliminate the risk of future episodes. Each recurrent episode can deepen the neurobiological, psychiatric, medical, economic, and quality-of-life burden while increasing the risk of future episodes. Yet, relapse prevention is not consistently established as a distinct treatment goal, and systematic assessment and stratification of recurrence risk remains uneven in practice. Clinicians need practical strategies to look beyond acute symptom relief, recognize recurrence risk as modifiable, and manage MDD across the full disease trajectory. By bringing together expert insight, real-world patient cases, community perspectives, and the lived experiences of people with MDD, this activity will reveal opportunities to shift from episodic treatment toward proactive, long-term care.

This fast-paced and highly interactive live CaseWise™ webcast from CME Outfitters will challenge learners to examine clinical decisions through the perspectives of experts, peers, patients, and a validated artificial intelligence (AI) clinical-reasoning platform. Through dynamic patient cases, learners will explore the cumulative burden of recurrent MDD, apply a relapse-prevention framework, integrate evidence-based recurrence risk assessment into routine care, and engage patients in shared relapse-prevention planning.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to better:

  • Evaluate the cumulative, multidomain burden (neurobiological, psychiatric, medical, economic, and quality-of-life) that accrues across recurrent major depressive episodes
  • Apply a relapse-prevention framework that treats recurrence risk as modifiable and establishes relapse prevention as an explicit, distinct treatment goal, using consistent definitions of relapse and recurrence
  • Integrate systematic, evidence-based assessment and stratification of relapse/recurrence risk into routine clinical encounters

Financial Support

This activity is supported through an independent educational grant from Lilly.

Psychiatrists, psychiatric physician associates (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs), psychiatric nurses, behavioral health HCPs (psychologists, therapists, social workers, and case managers), and psychiatric clinical pharmacists
