GLP-1 RAs Unlocked: Transforming T2D Care from Pathology to Practice

Statement of Need

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have become a cornerstone of type 2 diabetes (T2D) treatment, with strong endorsements from the American Diabetes Association and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology. Despite these clear guidelines, GLP-1 RAs remain significantly underutilized, as many clinicians still lack a deep understanding of how they work or their potentially disease-modifying impact on comorbid conditions commonly associated with T2D. GLP-1 RAs offer far more than blood sugar control and weight management: they deliver powerful protection for the heart, kidneys, and other key organ systems in the management of T2D. Expert-led, targeted education that demystifies the mechanisms of GLP-1 RAs for clinicians and multidisciplinary teams will bring their proven benefits to the forefront of clinical decision-making and improve the trajectory of care for patients with T2D.

In the second activity of this CME Outfitters Snack series, expert faculty will differentiate current and emerging GLP-1 RA therapies based on their dosing schedules, administration methods, and glycemic and extra-glycemic benefits. Faculty will identify the mechanisms of action (MOAs) of GLP-1 RAs including their effects on key organ systems, including the pancreas, liver, brain, kidneys, and CV system.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to better:

Differentiate current and emerging GLP-1 RA therapies based on their dosing schedules, administration methods, and glycemic and extra-glycemic benefits
Identify the mechanisms of action (MOAs) of GLP-1 RAs including their effects on key organ systems, including the pancreas, liver, brain, kidneys, and CV system
