Statement of Need

New therapies are reshaping care for noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) with F2–F3 fibrosis, yet compensated cirrhosis remains a frontier with no approved pharmacologic option. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) analogues are a closely watched investigational class targeting both metabolic dysfunction and fibrosis. The science is outpacing the literature that explains it: FGF21 biology, the agents in the class, and how to read the evolving trial data still sit mostly in congress presentations and primary reports. This activity brings it together for hepatology and gastroenterology clinicians, NPs, and PAs — a timely grounding in FGF21 biology, the latest evidence for FGF21 analogues, and the rationale for investigating this pathway in compensated cirrhosis.

In this CME Outfitters Snack, expert faculty will assist learners to explore the role of FGF21 across metabolic and fibrotic pathways, interpret emerging clinical evidence for FGF21 analogues in clinically significant MASH, and examine the scientific rationale for targeting the FGF21 pathway in patients with compensated cirrhosis due to MASH.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to better:

  • Evaluate the biology of FGF21 within metabolic and fibrotic pathways
  • Assess emerging clinical evidence for FGF21 analogues in clinically significant MASH
  • Appraise the rationale for FGF21-pathway therapy in compensated cirrhosis due to MASH

Financial Support

Supported by an educational grant from Novo Nordisk Inc.

Target Audience
