Statement of Need

Clinicians face considerable hurdles when diagnosing and managing narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia (IH), largely due to overlapping symptoms, insufficient formal training in sleep medicine, and limited recognition of associated psychiatric and cardiometabolic comorbidities. Compounding the challenge, some therapeutic agents—most notably sodium oxybate—carry the burden of excessive sodium content, which may further escalate cardiovascular (CV) risk. To address these multifaceted issues, clinicians must be equipped with targeted, high-impact education focused on integrating these agents into individualized care plans. Empowering clinicians with these tools is essential for transforming patient outcomes and elevating the standard of care in sleep medicine.

In this CME Outfitters live webcast, expert faculty will discuss strategies to better assess the impact of diagnostic delays in IH and narcolepsy, differentiate the effects of treatment selections, with an emphasis on CV risk and patient-specific considerations, and evaluate the sleep/wake cycle and its relationship to narcolepsy and IH to optimize its evaluation and management.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to better:

  • Assess the impact of diagnostic delays in IH, narcolepsy, and their associated comorbidities
  • Differentiate the effects of treatment selections on IH, narcolepsy, and associated comorbidities, with an emphasis on CV risk and patient-specific considerations
  • Evaluate the sleep/wake cycle and its relationship to narcolepsy and IH to optimize its evaluation and management
