Extraintestinal Manifestations in IBD — Screening, Referral Triggers, and Multidisciplinary Care Pathways

Statement of Need

Extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs) affect up to one-third of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and can significantly contribute to morbidity, impaired quality of life, and long-term disease burden, yet they remain inconsistently recognized and managed in clinical practice. Many gastroenterologists and multidisciplinary gastrointestinal (GI) care teams rely on reactive rather than proactive approaches to EIM identification, with limited use of structured screening workflows and referral pathways to support timely multidisciplinary intervention. In addition, clinicians may lack awareness of the shared immune mechanisms underlying intestinal and extraintestinal disease and how emerging therapies may help address systemic inflammation more comprehensively. This podcast is designed for gastroenterologists, GI fellows, physician associates, nurse practitioners, nurses, and pharmacists to strengthen recognition of high-impact EIMs, improve implementation of screening strategies, and support coordinated management for patients with IBD and EIMs.

In the third activity of this CMEO podcast series, expert faculty will assist learners to recognize common and clinically significant extraintestinal manifestations associated with IBD, incorporate practical screening approaches into routine clinical workflows, and implement multidisciplinary care strategies for patients with systemic disease involvement.
