Statement of Need

There are several risk factors in opioid use in dental patients, including young age, the pre-opioid epidemic standard of practice being to prescribe opioids as a first-line treatment, and patients being prescribed a high number of tablets. These risk factors combined with the current epidemic has led many clinicians to believe that depending on opioids as a first-line treatment should be a thing of the past. The number of opioid prescriptions that are written should be reduced, as dental pain can often be managed without opioids.

In this CME Outfitters Snack on the opioid epidemic, expert faculty discuss alternative pain management strategies for oral pain with a focus on finding a balance between compassion for patient care and patient safety.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of minimizing opioid use in the management of dental pain.
  • Educate patients about their pain to optimize safe and effective, multimodal treatment plans.

Financial Support

Supported by an educational grant from Johnson & Johnson.

Target Audience

Physicians, dentists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and pharmacists who manage patients with acute and chronic pain.
