New PCI Guidelines: An Interactive Debate with Experts on Indications and Implementations

Christopher P. Cannon, MD
Dr. Cannon is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an Associate Physician in the Cardiovascular Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He is a senior investigator of the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) Study Group, leading trials such as TACTICS-TIMI 18, PROVE IT-TIMI 22, CLARITY-TIMI 28, and MEDAL.

He earned his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, and after completing his residency in internal medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, he was a cardiovascular fellow at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

In addition to being a frequent lecturer, Dr. Cannon has published more than 500 original articles, reviews, editorials, book chapters, and electronic publications in the field of acute coronary syndromes. His research is published in journals including Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), Lancet, Journal of the American Medical Association, and the New England Journal of Medicine. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Critical Pathways in Cardiology and a 35-book series Contemporary Cardiology. He is editor or author of 6 books. He is the new Editor-in-Chief of the American College of Cardiology’s website Cardiosource (www.cardiosource. com).

Dr. Cannon has received numerous awards including the Alfred Steiner Research Award, Upjohn Achievement in Research Award, and Robert F. Loeb Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine. He is a fellow of the American Heart Association (AHA), and the ACC. He serves as Chairman of the AHA’s Get With the Guidelines Science Subcommittee, and of the ACC’s ACTION registry Steering Committee. He is the principal investigator of several ongoing trials, including IMPROVE IT, which will evaluate the benefit of lowering of LDL cholesterol well below 70 mg/dl with ezetimibe plus simvastatin as compared simvastatin alone.

Eric R. Bates, MD
Dr. Bates is Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan. Dr. Bates graduated from Princeton University and the University of Michigan Medical School. He trained in internal medicine and cardiology at the University of Michigan Hospitals.

His major clinical interests include acute myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndromes, and coronary artery disease. His research efforts have focused on fibrinolytic and catheter-based reperfusion therapy for acute myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock, antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy for coronary thrombosis, and coronary artery revascularization. Dr. Bates has served on the steering committees for several important international multicenter randomized clinical trials. He serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Cardiology, the European Journal of Cardiology, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, JACC-Cardiovascular Interventions, the American Heart Journal, Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, and Cardiology News, and is an associate editor for ACP Journal Club.

Dr. Bates is a member of the American College of Cardiology task force on clinical expert consensus documents and was the chair of the writing committee for the Clinical Expert Consensus Document on Carotid Stenting. He also is a member of the ACC Board of Trustees, chair of the Ethics and Discipline Committee, and a member of the Live Programs Committee. He was recently a member of the ACC Board of Governors and the ACC/AHA writing committee to revise the 1999 guidelines for acute myocardial infarction. Dr. Bates is the vice chair for the program committee of the AHA Council on Clinical Cardiology. He also is a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine Interventional Cardiology Test Committee.

David R. Holmes, Jr., MD
Dr. Holmes is currently a Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a consultant in the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases and the Department of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Holmes has also been named the Edward W. and Betty Knight Scripps Professor in Cardiovascular Medicine in Honor of Dr. George M. Gura, Jr. His special areas of interest include Acute Coronary Syndromes, Interventional Cardiology, Restenosis, Vascular Biology, Risk Outcomes Analysis, and Telemedicine. In addition, he is involved in the development of new catheter design and new approaches for treatment of a wide variety of patients with coronary artery disease and vein graft disease. Finally, he is involved in the development of continued application of percutaneous coronary intervention technology to noncoronary vascular beds.

Dr. Holmes received his medical degree at Marquette University Medical School in Milwaukee and completed his internship at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. He also served in the United States Navy at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda.
